"The Platine Magnum"

The design of this turntable is totally classical.
It is fitted in a subchassis suspension according to the brilliant scheme of Edgar Villechur for its popular and successful Acoustic Research turntable.

The originality of the Platine Magnum is placed in the systematic choice of parts as highly dimensionned as possible.
The main part - The platter - is tooled in an aluminum board of 120m/m of thickness and 500mm of diameter. The using of such a platter is a guarantee of a perfect work, not far from The theoretical ideal on the fundamental parameters as speed regularity and vibration absence.
Nevertheless, the considerable weight of this platter ( 60Kg ) asks for very special cares.
It should be incredible to let it rests on a simple steel ball as it is made for a light platter.
So, it is a sophisticated device with hydraulic pump which provides oil under pressure to maintain the work position of the platter and insure its lubrication in the same time.

THE PLATTER
Manufactured in a 120mm thickness AU4G aluminum board, it measures 500mm of diameter with a total weight of 60Kg.
The manufacturing of this essential part is realized on a numerical lathe of the last generation to obtain a maximum of precision and a perfect finishing.
The shape of this part is extremely simple, because there is only a peripheric groove to guide the belt, one can say that it is only a "washer" without any cavity able to enter in resonance.

THE SUB CHASSIS
It is cut in a piece of The most beautiful quality of granite
( fine Zimbabwe black )
Is it useful to evoke The quality of stability of this material becoming from the old ages.
This massive part weights 100Kg

THE BASE
It is fitted with 4 high density wood board glued together.
The 3 air dampers of the suspension are placed in its thickness.
Above it 3 plots sustain the granit sub chassis.
Under it 3 screws allow to settle the horizontality of the whole.

THE DRIVE MOTOR
In the aim to maximalize the regularity of the speed, 3 motors work in parallel.
The adjustments are placed on the front of the housing, they allow to select the speed, 33-45-78 RPM and to choose between the different diameters of the pulleys and the transmission way - linen thread or neoprene belt.
The housing is overloaded by a sheet metal pile to preserve it of any vibration.

THE ARM RESTS
The Platine Magnum is conceived for the using of 2 arm boards simultaneously ( 12" minumum )
Each arm base is manufactured in AU4G aluminum plates, it is composed by 4 parts fitted together by screws.
So, all possible adjustments are allowed and can maintain a less defective rigidity.

THE HYDRAULIC PUMP
It is fitted in a separate housing which can be installed under the turntable or placed at a certain distance because it is only linked by tubes.
The pump is trained by a 8 poles induction motor rotating at 60 RPM this low speed allows a perfect silent working.
Some other auxiliary devices adjust the flow to have it constant in all circumstancies.
To obtain the low speed of 60 RPM the motor is powered by a special generator giving a frequency of 4 Hertz in three phases from the main current (120/230V 50/60Hz).
